UPPER GWYNEDD, PA — One man is in custody after firing shots at police officers while high on methamphetamine in Upper Gwynedd over the weekend, authorities said.

The incident began at around noon after a man acting suspiciously was reported wandering around the area of E. Prospect Avenue.

When police arrived the suspect, identified only as a 35-year-old white man, fled the scene, trying to break into local sheds and a local resident's vehicle along the way.

Police tracked the man to a yard off nearby Cathy's Lane. Police Chief David Duffy said the man was maybe thirty feet at this point and the three officers on the scene attempted to engage him in conversation.

That's when the man turned and fired the shotgun at Upper Gwynedd officer Sgt. Ray Royds. Fortunately, the shot missed.

Officers did not return fire, "opting for restraint," Duffy said, and police were able to take him into custody.

Formal charges will be announced against the suspect once he is released from Abington-Lansdale Hospital, where he is undergoing detox.

In addition to the shotgun, the man had rifle and more ammunition on him when he was arrested.

No injuries were reported, and investigation into the incident remains underway.
