Spring = Road Construction

As the weather warms, so too comes road closures.

'Tis the season, right? No, not the holiday season. It is spring. And, in addition to those allergies, gorgeous blooming flowers and playing outdoors, there is another sign of the times.

With the warmer weather comes new road construction. The heated temperatures make it ideal to make the needed fixes to area roadways.

According to the township's website, the Inverness Lane Bridge Construction is "set to begin in the Spring of 2013 to replace bridge."

"The Township received a federal grant for the full replacement cost of the bridge," said the site. "Any updates to this schedule will be posted to the Township website."

Fetters Mill Bridge will also be worked on this season.

"Montgomery County engineers have closed the Fetters Mill Bridge indefinitely due to structural concerns," said the township's site. "For more information, please direct inquiries to Montgomery County at 610-278-3020."

However, on April 2, the county released a statement to say they'd plan to reopen the bridge with a temporary fix. No date has been set yet for its reopening, but the county promised it in the coming week, as previously reported by Lower Moreland Patch.

Engineers will place wooden beams underneath the bridge that will allow cars to travel over Pennypack Creek. The repairs will be restricted to a three-ton weight limit that will allow one car to travel over the bridge at time. No trucks, buses or emergency vehicles will be permitted with the temporary fix.

“I am thrilled beyond belief," Lower Moreland Township Vice President Jill Blumhardt said. "We’ve been trying to get it fixed since October. This is a solution that makes sense.”

With the temporary fix, the bridge will be inspected every six months to ensure the safety of the residents.
