For Thanksgiving, Lower Moreland Police Target Drunk Drivers

Lower Moreland joins numerous police departments across Montgomery County cracking down on drunk driving and seat belt use.

LOWER MORELAND, PA — Lower Moreland will join numerous police departments across Montgomery County cracking down on drunk driving and seat belt use this Thanksgiving. Upper Providence will participate as well.

It's part of "Operation Safe Holiday," a statewide campaign promoting safe driving during the holidays.

“We want to encourage everyone to drive safe and sober this holiday season,” PennDOT District 6 Executive, Kenneth M. McClain, said in a statement. “This is a time of year to have happy memories, not a time to be put in jail, get hurt, or even killed because you decided to get behind the wheel impaired.”

The winter holiday season is one of the most dangerous times for drivers. In 2017, the Philadelphia area saw 1,631 crashes and 13 fatalities on the road between Thanksgiving and New Years, according to PennDOT data. Nine of those fatalities and 184 of those crashes were impaired-driving related.

Pennsylvania State Police and PennDOT are coordinating with hundreds of departments around the state as part of this year's initiative.
