$326K Grant Will Connect Two Popular Montco Trail Networks

Following "unprecedented" park and trail usage in the area amid the pandemic, the state is funding a major project to connect local trails.

WORCESTER TOWNSHIP, PA — Following "unprecedented" park and trail usage in Montgomery County and around Pennsylvania amid the pandemic, the state is funding a major project to connect a pair of popular trail networks.

The $326,200 grant was awarded to Worcester Township to expand the Zacharias Creek Trail by about 1.15 miles, officials said.

The extension will take the trail all the way from Anders Road to Evansburg State Park. State Rep. Joe Webster noted the importance of the trail in the light of "unprecedented" park and trail usage during the pandemic.

"The $326,000 in funding from DCNR for this project will allow us to connect two popular trail networks increasing multimodal access to different green spaces across our county," Webster said in a statement.

The funding will also allow the township to construct a new bridge, ADA access, landscaping, signage, and other related improvements.

The trail currently runs from Heebner Park to the border of Skippack Township.

It's part of roughly $7.6 million in funding announced this week by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Recreation and Conservation grant program.

The state also earmarked $428,000 for another project in Montgomery County: the Royersford Trestle Bridge along the Schuylkill River Trail.
