Lower Providence Historical Society to Host Breakfast Fundraiser

The historical society will hold a breakfast buffet at Chadwick's, Nov. 17 for the continued preservation of the historic Casselberry House.

Doug Hager, president of the Lower Providence Historical Society (LPHS) announced that the LPHS will hold a breakfast fundraising event, Nov. 17 at Chadwick’s at The Club at Shannondell in Audubon.

Hager, speaking during the Nov. 1 Township Board of Supervisors meeting, explained that the fundraising event will be held for the preservation and maintenance of the historic Casselberry House.

“We use it as the headquarters for the historical society, and improve it for the township to utilize it,” Hager said. “A lot of major and expensive work still needs to be done.”

According to Hager,  one of the LPHS major projects is the stabilization and preservation of the historic Casselberry House located in the Evansburg section of Lower Providence. The Township and the LPHS have entered an agreement to restore an maintain the house.

Hager said that the house’s historical significance to the township is due to its age, architecture and structural changes by Casselberry family who owned the house for 150 years.

According to Hager, the core of the house was built in 1734, with five additions to the house that reflects the changing needs of its inhabitants.

“The Casselberry family was a locally prominent family throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries,” Hager  told the board. “One of the significant events that occurred at the house was the visit of George Washington during the encampment of the Continental Army at Valley Forge.”

Hager also outlined several immediate improvements needed for the Casselberry house:

  • Stabilizing the foundation
  • Renovating the main front room
  • Replacing the bath room
  • Painting the exterior trim
  • Replacing windows
  • Repairing the floors on the first floor
  • Replacing and upgrading the electrical and plumbing
  • Other maintenance items

About the LPHS Breakfast fundraiser at Chadwicks

The Nov. 17 LPHS fundraising event will take place from 8 – 10 a.m. The breakfast will consist of eggs, pancakes, juice, coffee tea, toast and more.

Tickets cost $10 per person and $5 per child under the age of 12, and may be purchased from members of the Lower Providence Historical Society or picked up at Chadwicks restaurant, located at 2750 Egypt Road in Audubon.

In addition, the LPHS is seeking sponsors.
