Montco Native Brings Home Oscar For 'La La Land' Song

The Main Line native and his writing partner were nominated for two songs and both came out on top in the Best Original Song category.

Ardmore's Benj Pasek was nominated twice in the same category at the 89th Academy Awards and left the ceremony with an Oscar Sunday night for he and his writing partner's work on a song in the hit movie "La La Land."

Pasek – a Friends' Central grad – his writing partner Justin Paul, and composer Justin Hurwitz won for "City of Stars" in the Hollywood-inspired film starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who won best actress for her role in "La La Land."

Pasek, Paul, and Hurwitz took home a Golden Globe for best original song in early January for "City of Stars," as well.

The trio was also nominated for "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)" from "La La Land," giving them en edge over the other nominees, which included Justin Timberlake for "Can't Stop the Feeling" from "Trolls," Lin-Manuel Miranda for "How Far I'll Go" from "Moana," and Sting for "The Empty Chair" from "Jim."

Overall, "La La Land" took home six total Academy Awards, including best directing, best cinematography, and best original score.
