Chesco Nor'easter Updates: Crashes As 5 Inches Falls Overnight

Snow accumulation varied around Chester County with 5 inches reported in some places, no power outages, and a morning crash on U.S. 202.

MALVERN, PA — Roads were slick this morning around Chester County after several inches of snow fell overnight on Sunday, leaving 2-5 inches — for now — as more snow is falling and travel on I-76 is allowed only at 45 miles per hour.

East Coventry and Oxford townships reported the most snowfall overnight at around 5 inches. West Chester and Valley Forge had about 2 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning continuing into Tuesday morning, with another 2-4 inches of snow on the way, as 1-3 inches may also accumulate during the day today. This means by Tuesday, up to 7 inches more snow may have fallen on Chester County, according to NWS forecasts today.

Social media users shared information during the morning commute, saying roads were still slippery.

Officials reported a crash on U.S. 202 northbound between at the PA 29 S. Malvern and N. Great Valley exit, and PA 252 exit. A lane was reported restricted just after 12 p.m. on Monday.

Officials earlier in the day reported a crash that restricted a lane on U.S. 202 northbound at the Westtown Road exit at 9:13 a.m.

Another morning crash happened around 8:35 a.m. on I-76 westbound at Exit 332 on Rt. 23, restricting the Conshohocken ramp, officials reported.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reduced speeds on major roadways to 45 miles per hour.

School districts began making announcements Sunday afternoon in the declared snow emergency that classes would take place virtually. Phoenixville, Tredyffrin/Easttown, Spring-Ford, and Great Valley all held all-virtual classes on Monday. West Chester Area School District was closed on Monday and announced classes would be all-remote on Tuesday. Radnor Township schools were closed Monday.

PECO reported no power outages in Chester County on Monday morning.

The National Weather Service is calling for more snow tonight, as blustery windes of 15-20 miles per hour blow, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour. Another 2-4 inches of snow is forecast by 10 a.m. Tuesday.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, and noted that for those who must head out, speeds are reduced to 45 miles per hour on the following highways until precipitation stops and roads are clear: Interstates 76, 95, 295, 476, 676; U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422; and State Routes 63, 100 Spur and 309.

  • Pughtown 7.5 inches around 3 p.m. Feb. 1
  • East Nantmeal Township 4.3 inches 12:27 a.m. Feb. 1
  • West Caln Township 5.1 inches around 3 p.m. Feb. 1
  • Avondale 4.0 inches at 9 p.m. Jan. 31
  • Wallace Township 4.0 inches at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 31
  • Paoli 3.5 inches at 9:30 p.m on Jan. 31
  • New London Township 3.5 inches at 9:29 p.m. Jan. 31
  • Schuylkill Township 3.4 inches at 9:15 p.m. Jan. 31
  • Jennersville 3.3 inches at 7:45 p.m. Jan. 31
  • Berwyn 2.8 inches at 1:15 p.m. Jan. 31
  • Valley Forge 5.2 inches around 3 p.m. Feb. 1
  • West Chester 2.0 inches at 8 p.m. Jan. 31

In Delaware County the National Weather Service reported:

  • Villanova 2.8 inches at 9 p.m. Jan. 31
  • Upper Darby 2.5 inches at 11:54 p.m. Jan. 31
  • Chadds Ford Township 2.5 inches 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31
