Former Phillies Pitcher Named Immaculata's 2013 Commencement Speaker

Former Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer, a Montgomery County native, will speak at the May 19 commencement ceremony of Immaculata University.

The IU website describes the longtime baseball player—who is currently the oldest player in the major leagues—as a father, teacher and philanthropist. He will receive an honorary doctorate in humane letters from the school in recognition of his charity work:

Moyer, through his Moyer Foundation founded in 2000, is dedicated to providing comfort and support to children enduring a time of profound physical, emotional or financial distress. With the community’s support, the Moyer Foundation has raised more than $20 million to support over 225 different programs that directly serve the needs of children in distress. 

Moyer played for Philadelphia from 2006 to 2010. The Immaculata site goes on to list his numerous professional accomplishments, such as having "the most wins, losses, and strikeouts of any active major league pitcher."

The commencement ceremony is invitation-only and not open to the public, according to the school's communications office.
