Malvern Runner Was Near Boston Marathon Blast
A New York Times multimedia spread shows a Malvern resident approaching the finish line as the first bomb detonated.

Malvern resident Johanna Hantel was moments from completing the Boston Marathon when the first of two bombs detonated near the finish line.
A multimedia article on the New York Times website captures the moment the bomb exploded—4:09:43 on the race clock—and the experiences of the people closest to the blast. Hantel reflects on the selflessness of the fans and the article describes an injury she sustained in the chaos after the bomb went off:
After the explosion, a photographer knocked her over and she dislocated two fingers. When she got up, she saw a medic, who popped her fingers back in place, saying: “Don’t worry. I’m an orthopedist."
Hantel has run dozens of marathons, according to the article, and, like fellow Malvern resident Keith Straw, she said Boston is her favorite.
