MALVERN, PA — A Malvern Prep student group has invited school shooting survivor David Hogg to inaugurate its speaker series on Monday night.

Hogg survived the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. He is the inaugural speaker for a new student-led speaker series at Malvern Preparatory School.

Four Malvern Prep Upper School students started the series, called The CSItizen (pronounced "citizen") Speaker Series. The CSI in the word refers to the school's new Center for Social Impact building, referred to on campus as the CSI.

The series is dedicated to celebrating stories of positive social impact, and empowering the next generation of social entrepreneurs and activists.

"We focus our story-telling around what we call the citizen moment which is the moment our speaker decided to become dedicated to their social impact," said Cole Cherian, one of the student founders.

"We want Malvern Prep students to walk away from the program wondering what their citizen moment is going to be," Said Cherian.

Hogg, 20, is an outspoken advocate for gun-control legislation and is a founding member of Never Again MSD. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event will be virtual, streamed live on YouTube Monday at 7 p.m.

In lieu of a traditional speaking fee, the speakers will be recognized with a named and dedicated CSItizen Scholarship, offering a full scholarship to Malvern Prep to a high-achieving, underprivileged student in the area.
