Wrestling Champion Jawan “JayJay” Jones ‘15 Returns to Phelps
Ithaca College and Phelps School Grad Looks to Give Back to America's Youth
When recent college graduate and former high school All-American wrestler Jawan Jones attended his old assistant wrestling coach's wedding this past summer, little did he know it would lead to a fantastic opportunity, leading the varsity wrestling program at his former prep school, Phelps. The affable Jones connected with many old friends, but one critical conversation with Phelps School President, Mrs. Stephany Fahey, was the key. Phelps needed a leader to invigorate its wrestling program, and JJ was looking for a place he could use not only his wrestling skills but also fulfill his passion for giving back to young men and helping them to develop as people of character as well as athletes.
With his degree in hand from Ithaca College and more than 80 collegiate wins on the mat, coming back to his alma mater was an incredible opportunity that would also provide the foundation for Phelps' future wrestling program’s success. Phelps’ Athletic Director Jason McGhee said, “Having a great young coach like JJ, whose passion for wrestling is off the charts is amazing! It’s an AD’s dream come true. JJ epitomizes the very best of both a Phelps graduate and a young man of character. He is a tremendous role model for all our students”. McGhee went on to say, “JJ has taken full advantage of what Phelps could do for him, and is now eager to simply pass along all the life lessons he’s learned both on and off the mat.”
If you want to catch JJ and the lions in action, they will host Solebury School in the new Phelps Athletic Center on Wednesday, February 5 at 4:00pm.
