Hope the Kitten Recovering Well, Despite Odds

The animal was beaten and given heroin, authorities said.

Hope, the little black kitten given heroin, is recovering well, despite the odds.

The staff at Hope Veterinary Specialists in Malvern, where the kitten was taken for treatment, says the kitten is purring and playing -- practically a miracle, considering what the animal went through.

James Myers, 24, of the 1300 Mary Jane Lane in West Chester, strangled the kitten, gave it heroin and knocked out several of its teeth by bashing its head into the pavement, Chester County District Attorney Thomas P. Hogan said.

Myers faces animal cruelty and drug charges, Hogan said.

West Whiteland Police Officer Marc Meshurle was patrolling Dunwoody Drive in West Whiteland Township around 4:40 a.m. Aug. 3 when he caught Myers abusing the kitten.

The heroic police officer visited Hope at the vet office this week, Hope Veterinary Specialists shared in a Facebook Post.

Once Hope is well enough, he will be placed in a foster home by the Chester County SPCA, the vet said. He will have to stay in a foster home while his case is ongoing, but then he will be placed in a forever home.

Hope Veterinary Specialists is directing all questions about Hope, his fostering and his eventual adoption to the Chester County SPCA. Contact the SPCA at 610-692-6113.

People interested in adopting Hope might want to consider one of the many other cats in shelters, the vet office said, “especially the black cats/kittens that get overlooked due to old superstitions.”
