Local Family to Receive Resilience Award

The Moyer Foundation Honors their Commitment to Grieving Children

The Moyer Foundation is pleased to announce that Newtown Square Business Owner, Sheila Turner, her children, Kyle & Eve, and her husband, Jeff Hilliard will receive the Karen Phelps Moyer Resilience Award at their annual Champion’s for Children Celebration on Thursday, October 25th at VIE in Philadelphia. This prestigious award is given to a person or family impacted by grief or addiction who, through their courage to grow, have helped and inspired others in similar circumstances.

Turner, owner of From the Top Studio of Dance, and her family have been actively involved with helping their local community and The Moyer Foundation for close to a decade. The Moyer Foundation is a public, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to provide comfort, hope and healing to children and families affected by grief and addiction. The foundation supports thousands of children and families each year through its free signature programs and services.

One such program is Camp Erin – a free weekend camp for kids who have lost a loved one. Turner sent her 2 young children to camp in 2010 after they lost their Dad to brain cancer. While it was difficult to spend the weekend apart, she knew it was important for them to find healthy ways to grieve. “From the moment I saw the joy on their faces after that weekend at Camp Erin, I promised myself that we would do everything we could to give back. Camp was a game-changer for our family. It literally gave us the hope and momentum we needed to keep living our lives despite our loss”, Turner said.

That was back in 2010, and for the past eight years, Kyle, Eve, Sheila, Jeff, and the newest addition to their blended family, Nikki (4yrs old), have been an integral part of The Moyer Foundation. Just a few weeks after their amazing Camp Erin experience, Sheila and the kids were asked to speak at Citizen’s Bank Park for the foundation’s Celebrity Waiters Event. The crowd was moved to tears after hearing the kids speak about how much Camp Erin helped them after losing their Dad.

The family’s honest and emotional story telling continued as Sheila began writing a blog for Camp Erin Parents. Kyle and Eve have, and continue to, volunteer to speak for the foundation’s promotional and fundraising events. Kyle even spent part of his senior year doing his internship at the foundation’s Philadelphia office, and Jeff was the #1 fundraiser earning himself a bib to run in the New York City Marathon. They’ve also appeared on the Anderson Cooper show to talk about grief through the holidays, and have been featured on numerous local radio shows and publications.
