Major Delco Fuel Spill Forces School Closure, Kills Wildlife

Coebourn Elementary School in Brookhaven was forced to close after a reported 4,700 gallons of fuel spilled in nearby Friday.

BROOKHAVEN, PA — A Delaware County elementary school was forced to close and wildlife was killed after thousands of gallons of fuel spilled recently.

Coebourn Elementary School in Brookhaven closed after a large amount of gasoline flowed onto the school property when it spilled at a nearby gas station.

According to the school, students will be learning virtual Monday and Tuesday as crews clean up the spill.

County officials said the gas leaked into Sheppards Run tributary and Chester Creek, killing many fish, turtles and frogs.

Action News reports the spill occurred Friday at the Gas N Go gas station and about 4,700 gallons spilled out into the land.

County official said the soil contamination was extensive due to the spill being unreported Friday into Saturday.

In addition to local responders, The Delaware County Daily Times reports the EPA, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the Delaware County Hazardous Materials Team and Emergency Services responded to the scene.
