Marple, Newtown Honor Matthew Wzorek's Life 1 Year After Passing

Matthew Wzorek died too young at just 7 years old in February 2020 after complications with the flu. Here's how to help celebrate his life.

MARPLE-NEWTOWN, PA — Nearly one year ago, a young member of the Marple-Newtown community lost a battle with influenza. Now, the public is planning to honor his untimely death one year later.

Matthew Wzorek died on Feb. 16, 2020 at just 7 years old.

Known as "Smiley," Matthew loved Disney, Harry Potter, cuddling with his family, and putting his all into basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and more, according to his obituary.

"Heaven gained an angel yesterday," his mother Rebecca Horowitz Wzorek wrote.

In honor of Matthew's passing, the community is lighting up in blue.

Homes and businesses are asked to show unity and support for the Wzorek family from through Feb. 28 by adding blue lightbulbs to their fixtures.

The blue color symbolizes the community's love and support for the Wzorek family and Matthew's legacy.

Community members are also asked to take photos of their blue lights on Monday, Feb. 15 and Tuesday, Feb. 16 then posting them to social media with the hasthag #BlueForMatthew.

The effort was initially planned as a surprise for the Wzorek family, the family has already been informed and there is no need to wait to turn your lights blue.
