New Survey Shows Top Toys This Holiday Season

Barbie had a good run, but she's not the doll little girls are clamoring for, a National Retail Federation survey shows.

The clue is in the riddle: Who just got “frozen” out of the top spot of American girls’ holiday wish lists?

For the first time in 11 years, Barbie has been dethroned. The Disney Frozen Sparkle Princess Elsa Doll has taken her place, according to the National Retail Federation’s Holiday Top Toys Survey.

One in five parents, or 20 percent, surveyed said they plan to buy Disney’s “Frozen” merchandise for their daughters, compared with 16.8 percent who plan to make a Barbie purchase.

“Barbie has been the top girls’ toy for over a decade, but it is no surprise that Disney’s ‘Frozen’ has taken the top seat as children have had it on the mind as far back as Halloween,” said Pam Goodfellow, consumer insights director for Prosper Insights & Analytics, which conducted the survey.

For boys, LEGO toys are again No. 1, with 14.2 percent of parents saying they will shop for such merchandise for the boys on their lists.

The survey showed that 42 percent of shoppers plan to buy toys as gifts this holiday season. Boys and girls alike have requested tablets or Apple iPads from mom and dad this holiday season. Other familiar items on the list include My Little Pony for girls and Hot Wheels and Xbox One for boys.

The NRF 2014 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey was designed to gauge consumer behavior and shopping trends related to the winter holidays. The survey polled 6,593 consumers and was conducted Nov. 3-10. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points.
