Weekend Pick: Firefighting Day to Showcase Antique Trucks

Looking for something fun and free to do this weekend in Bucks County?

Fire companies from around area will showcase their antique equipment at a Firefighting Day event this Sunday at the Mercer Museum in Doylestown.

The event, which is free, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As many as 40 pre-1960, hand-drawn, horse-drawn and motorized apparatus will be on display. Firefighting Day is free and open to the public.

The event is in celebration of the museum’s Volunteer Firefighting exhibit.

Participating fire companies will display apparatus ranging from the early 1800s to the 1950s.

According to information from the museum, some of the apparatus to be displayed include: a 1796 Horse drawn pumper (Newtown), 1800 Red Hose Carriage (Doylestown Borough), 1901 Rumsey Ladder (Quakertown 17), a 1926 Ford Model T American LaFrance Chemical Truck (Warrington), a 1929 Model A Ford Chief’s Car (Yardley) and a 1932 Chevrolet Tanker (Trevose).

There will also be activities, including scavenger hunts, engine pumping demonstrations, “putting out a fire” in a model house assisted by firemen, fire prevention information, storytelling, and information on how to become a volunteer firefighter.

There will also be food available for purchase from Big Poppa’s Barbecue food truck and Sweet Pea Ice Cream.

The Mercer Museum’s exhibit, To Save Our Fellow Citizens: Volunteer Firefighting, 1800 – 1875, tells the story of Philadelphia’s volunteer firefighters and fire companies as the city grew and expanded during the 1800s.
