'Bright' Lesson for Perkiomen Valley Students

High school science class has teens find practical use for old holiday lights

The Perkiomen Valley School District released the following information:

Perkiomen Valley High School students studying earth science used discarded holiday lights, recycled cardboard and paperclips to create electrical circuit boards that will help them to learn vocabulary terms.

The ninth graders used hundreds of feet of wire and lights from discarded light strands as well as recycled cardboard and paper clips to create circuit boards. The boards were constructed to test the students’ knowledge of terms and definitions by lighting only when a connection was made between the correct term and meaning. The boards can be reused for any lesson topic by changing the cards that have the words and terms on them, and by modifying the arrangements of the paper clips.

So that the projects could be completed, each student supplied a D cell battery, and district staffers donated old light strands they might otherwise have tossed away. Electricians from Local 380 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, including Business Manager/Financial Secretary Dave Shaaf (father of PVHS graduates), provided wire cutters and other tools to help students with their projects.
