Camp Cadet Provides Youth Insight into Police Work
Pennsylvania State Police of the Skippack Barracks hosts the week-long camp patterned after municipal and state police training.
Troop K of the Pennsylvania State Police’s Skippack Station, in cooperation with municipal police departments, will hold its annual Camp Cadet, from Aug. 11 – 16.
The week-long, co-ed camp will be held at Camp Kweebec in Limerick, and is open to youth ages 11 – 14, who are residents of Montgomery, Philadelphia and Delaware counties, which Troop K patrols.
According to Troop K Trooper Morgan Crummy, Camp Cadet director, the purpose of Camp Cadet is to provide insight into police training and the overall expectations of a police officer. She said the program is a true-to-life experience, patterned after municipal and state police training, in which the youth participants gain an understanding and respect for the law, as well as themselves.

She said that the program is not a recreational camp, nor is it a disciplinary camp for problem youth.
“This is not boot camp,” Crummy said, in a recent career day visit to Skyview Upper Elementary School. “This is a camp for kids that are interested in becoming police or military.”

Crummy said that youth participants will be challenged by classroom instruction and physical activities. Self-discipline is also taught.
“There is an emphasis on self-discipline and teamwork,” Crummy said in a press release. “Bunks must be spotless each morning and counselors are addressed as ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am’.”
Crummy said that the discipline taining fosters a postive attitude, which helps many graduating cadets attain goals once thought unattainable.
The State Police are now accepting applications for those interested in the camp. Brochures are distributed to patrol area school districts and are available at all State Police stations in Montgomery, Philadelphia and Delaware counties.
