Man, 23, Dies After Half Marathon In Montgomery County

John McMordie died Friday after suffering from heat stroke during a half marathon in Montgomery County on Aug. 21, officials said.

A 23-year-old Bucks County man died Friday after suffering from heat stroke during a half marathon in Montgomery County, according to officials.

John McMordie of Perkasie collapsed while running a half-marathon on Sunday, Aug. 21 in East Greenville, Montgomery County.

The Lehigh County Coroner's office told Lehighvalleylive.com that McMordie collapsed shortly before 10 a.m. and was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was pronounced dead Friday and an autopsy was done Saturday, which showed he died of complications from heat stroke, the report said.

According to his obituary, McMordie was a member of Covenant Church in Doylestown, where he participated in Youth Group and various service projects.

He was a 2011 Pennridge High School graduate, where he excelled in academics and music, his obituary said.

"John loved learning, music, and running, but most of all, he loved people. He lit up the room when he entered," his obituary reads.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sept. 1 at the Pennridge High School Main Auditorium, 1228 North Fifth Street, Perkasie.

John Edward Gordon McMordie, of Perkasie, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016, at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Twp., Lehigh Co., of injuries sustained in a running accident. He was 23.

Born in Sellersville, he was the son of Bruce Gordon and Cheryl Lynn (Weesner) McMordie, of Perkasie. John was a 2011 graduate of Pennridge High School, Perkasie, where he excelled in academics and music. He played trumpet in the marching band, orchestra and jazz band. He participated in bands and orchestras at the district, regional, state and All Eastern US levels. Among many honors, he was an Intelligencer John Fisher Citizen Scholar in 2011.

John attended Stanford University, in Palo Alto, CA, where he was a campus tour guide for three years. He was a resident assistant in a freshman dorm there his senior year. John attained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2015, receiving the Terman Engineering Scholastic Award as one of the top 5% in his class as well as the Stanford Alumini Assoc. Award of Excellence for leadership and dedication to the University. John was currently continuing his graduate studies at Stanford, serving as a teaching assistant in the Product Realization Lab.

John was a member of Covenant Church, Doylestown, where he participated in Youth Group and many service projects as a student.

John loved learning, music, and running, but most of all, he loved people. He lit up the room when he entered. When he talked to you, you got all of him. He was always asking questions, but only to learn more about you and what you loved. He was the incarnation of love for his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Heather Lynice McMordie, of Philadelphia, PA, and Emily Rae McMordie, of Conshohocken, PA, and his maternal grandmother, Evelyn (Hunsberger) Weesner, of Perkasie. He was preceded in death by a maternal grandfather, Wesley Weesner, and his paternal grandparents, Gordon and Alice (Glenn) McMordie.

Family and friends are invited to attend John’s Memorial Service to be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at the Pennridge High School Main Auditorium, 1228 North Fifth Street, Perkasie. Interment will be held privately in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Perkasie.

In lieu of flowers and in recognition of John’s generous spirit, the family requests that blood donations in his memory be made to the American Red Cross to “pay it forward." Arrangements are by the Bernard Suess Funeral Home, 606 Arch Street, Perkasie.
