Reports: Announcement About Suspended Priests Expected

St. Eleanor's in-residence priest among those on leave. The cases have had no official, public resolution for more than a year.

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput will meet with archdiocesan priests at 2 p.m. at Cardinal O'Hara High School, according to a CBS News report, "stirring hopes that he may announce the fates of nearly two dozen clergy suspended last year over child sex-abuse or misconduct allegations," states a Philadelphia Inquirer article.

The CBS story cites unnamed sources as reporting that Chaput will make an announcent about the priests "in the coming days."

The Rev. Robert W. Povish, an in-residence priest at in Collegeville, is one of the priests in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia who has been placed on administrative leave. Those on leave face accusations of inappropriate behavior or boundary issues with minors, or of more serious abuse, according to a March 2011 interview with archdiocesan Director of Communications Donna Farrell.

The suspensions came on the heels of a February 2011 grand jury report that charged the Archdiocese of Philadelphia had allowed several priests to remain in active ministry despite what the grand jury deemed credible allegations of abuse or misconduct.

Povish's leave was announced at St. Eleanor's Ash Wednesday Mass in March 2011.
