2017 Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Tops 5 Weekend Things To Do Around Peters

There's also Pirates games, a Steelers Family Fest at Heinz Field and more.

PETERS TOWNSHIP, PA - There was no debate here at Patch’s swank Pittsburgh office over what event would top this Five Things To Do This Weekend list. It’s regatta weekend.

The EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta runs Friday through Sunday in and around Point State Park, the North Shore and a trio of rivers we once named a stadium after: The Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio.

So what’s going on? Almost too much for the senses to handle.

But we distilled what you absolutely need to know about the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta because we don’t want you to feel overwhelmed. We also spotlighted an event making its debut as the regatta celebrates its 40th anniversary: the wacky Red Bull Flugtag. If you have a desire to go into sensory overload even after reading what you need to know, feel free to peruse the entire regatta schedule.

Admission to the regatta is free, but there are plenty of things to spend money on there - such as up-close tickets for the regatta musical acts.

Other weekend highlights:

  • Steelers Family Fest, Aug. 6, 5 p.m. Heinz Field, North Shore

For the the first time, the Steelers will hold a training camp practice at Heinz Field, but there will be much more to do than just watch the players. The event will include numerous kids activities, a viewing of the 2016 Steelers Highlight film on the new scoreboard and on field performances by the Steeline Drumline, Hell on Wheels BMX Stunt Show, and Bill Camp’s Famous Flying Dogs. Did we mention there also will be a Lego replica of Heinz Field on display?

  • Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Diego Padres, Aug. 5, 7:05 p.m.; Aug. 6 1:35 p.m., PNC Park, North Shore.

With the trade deadline having passed on Monday without the Pirates making a major deal, you’ll undoubtedly be curious to see what the same-look Bucs will be up to against the less-than-powerhouse Padres. Free T-shirts will be given to the first 20,000 fans on Saturday, while Sunday is Kid Backpack Day - just in time for the start of school in a few weeks. Pirates tickets start at $19.

  • Nick’s Fat City, Aug. 6 7:30 p.m. Hartwood Acres Park, Indiana Township

If you’re of a certain age (middle), and lived in Pittsburgh when you were in your 20s, then you probably remember Nick’s Fat City. Several acts that regularly played the popular South Side nightclub space that is now Diesel will give Nick’s former patrons a chance to walk down memory lane. The concert features Gathering Field, Brownie Mary and an acoustic show featuring three of the four members of the Clarks - Scott Blasey, Rob JAmes and Greg Joseph. Nick’s Fat City admission is free.

  • Full Moon Kayak Tour, Aug. 6, 7 p.m. L. L. Bean Trailer, North Park

If you don’t want to relive your misspent youth at Nick’s Fat City, we suppose you could instead discover the beauty of nature at night as you paddle through calm waters under the glow of the summer moon. No kayaking experiencing is necessary, but the minimum age is 10 and anyone 14 or under must be accompanied by an adult. The Full Moon Kayak Tour costs $59 per person.
