Man Discovers Someone Else Buried In Mother's Cemetery Plot

Nancy Mirich wanted to be laid to rest next to her husband. Someone else already is.

PETERS TOWNSHIP, PA - When he went to bury his mother last week, Peter Mirich made an awful discovery: someone already was buried in her plot.

Mirich told KDKA-TV that his mother’s dying wish was to be interred next to her husband at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Wheeling, WV. Mirich received a call alerting him to the problem about an hour before the funeral of Nancy Mirich, 87.

“They said, `We have a problem here at the cemetery,’” Mirich told the station. “They had a partial hole dug, you could see vaults, there wasn’t room (for the casket).”

According to KDKA, Mt. Zion Cemetery is run primarily by Ohio County, which took over operations because the cemetery has no governing body or full-time caretaker. Mirich and his wife, Tracy, who could not immediately be reached by Patch Tuesday, have reached out to the Ohio County commissioners and the West Virginia governor’s office for help.

“We can’t keep Nancy at the funeral home forever,” Tracy Mirich said. “I mean, at some point we’ve got to bury her.”
