PennDOT, Local Police Announce Aggressive-Driving Enforcement

Tailgating.

Changing lanes without signaling.

Speeding.

Peters Township police Capt. Michael Yanchak said they are all forms of aggressive driving, which, statistically, is responsible for more deaths each year than drunk driving.

And local police departments - as part of a statewide initiative - are partnering with the state Department of Transportation to try to put the brakes on these behaviors.

From now through Aug. 15, Peters, North Strabane, Cecil and South Strabane police will be taking part in an aggressive-driving enforcement initiative.

State Route 19 will be one of the local roadways targeted by Peters and North Strabane police, offices said.

Police, as well as PennDOT spokesman Jay Ofsanik, said they hope the targeted enforcement will spur drivers to forego the behaviors that often lead to crashes.

While people are aware of the dangers of drink driving, Ofsanik said he hopes this initiative will shed more light on the dangers of aggressive driving.

Of the 29 deaths attributed to car crashes last year in Washington County, five were caused by aggressive driving, according to PennDOT.
