8 Killed In Memorial Day Weekend Crashes: PA State Police

Eight people were killed in crashes over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Pennsylvania State Police said.

PENNSYLVANIA — Eight people were killed in crashes over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Pennsylvania State Police said.

According to State Police, the agency investigated 844 crashes during the four-day holiday driving period, which was from May 28 through May 31.

In addition to the eight fatalities, 183 people were injured. Alcohol was a factor in 63 of the crashes, but it was not a factor in any of the fatal crashes, police said.

Pennsylvania State Police Troopers made 596 arrests for driving under the influence and issued 9,624 speeding citations over the holiday weekend. There were 1,025 citations for not wearing seat belts and 144 citations for not securing children in safety seats.

The number of crashes during the 2021 holiday driving period was up from 2019 but the number of fatalities was down slightly. Data was not collected in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2019, there were 755 crashes and nine deaths.

Troop F, which includes Cameron, Clinton, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Tioga and Union counties, reported three of the fatalities. Troops A, B, E, H and N also reported fatal crashes.

Note: These statistics cover only those crashes investigated by state police and do not include statistics on incidents to which other law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania responded.
