Lancaster Placenta Company Eases Baby Blues With Supplements
Formula helps new moms get on their feet faster
Post-partum depression can be debilitating for women who have just given birth can now take hormone-rich capsules made from the ground-up remains of their dried placenta.“Placenta encapsulation” is gaining popularity since it not only helps women ward off the post-partum depression and rage, it also helps them produce more breast milk and get back on their feet again faster. We sat down with Callie Landis, CEO of Lancaster Placenta Company for an interview:
How did you get started in this business?
I got started when I was pregnant with my second child and realized there wasn’t a company doing this in a way that I felt comfortable with. I had heard about placenta encapsulation and I wanted to try it out to see if it helped with my postpartum mood
regulation and my energy levels. I wanted a professional who would prepare my placenta in a sterile environment and who was aware of food safety regulations and the consequences of cross contamination and blood borne pathogens.

Has placenta encapsulation changed over the years?

The industry is totally unregulated and always has been. There has been a small grassroots push more recently by a very small percentage of providers to have more accountability and oversight in the industry, in order to protect moms and babies. In other countries in recent years there have been laws and changes made that include more regulation and oversight, and I hope to see that trend begin to take ground here in the US. Encapsulation has largely remained the same for decades, with one exception. When we came into the scene we wanted to take a process that utilized a not-so-attractive (yet beneficial) product (the placenta) and turn it into something special, attractive, and beneficial. Whereas in the past, placenta encapsulation was mostly a homegrown process where self-trained providers performed the craft either in the mother’s own home or in their personal kitchen, we took the process and incorporated both food safety and healthcare standards. We raised the bar in the industry and gave clients a safe and
professional option, and soon after began offering the nationwide shipping service—one of the few companies offering this service in the entire country.
When should an expectant mother first contact your company?
We can accommodate mothers at all stages of pregnancy. Some mothers like to contact us as soon as possible and place their order, which is great, and we love their enthusiasm. We will ship out their kit to them and remind them not to lose any of the items before
they give birth. We also have mothers who place their order from the hospital after giving birth, and even some moms who gave birth and weren’t sure what they would choose to do with their placenta, so they froze it for a few weeks until they made a decision. As long as the placenta is kept at refrigerated temperatures after delivery and frozen before the 72-hour mark, moms can take as much time as they need to place their order with us!
What is something people do not realize about doing this process?
A lot of clients are surprised at our turn around time. When we pick up a local placenta it is transported back to our lab and processing begins immediately. We have the products completed within 24 hours to get back to moms ASAP. When placentas are shipped to us they arrive overnight and we process them immediately and ship the products back so most moms will receive them in approximately 3 days, depending on where she lives. Clients also typically don’t realize the amount of research and training we’ve put into our process and our products. We’ve spent years crafting our products, recipes, and safety protocols and standards in order to be the best and safest choice in the country.
What other products do you offer?
Along with placenta pills we also offer a balm that can be used for nearly any topical ailment for mom and baby, a tincture for long term wellness, placenta gummy bears (the only company in the nation offering these!), placenta prints to hang in the nursery, umbilical cord keepsakes in choice of colors, placenta smoothies (mostly for local homebirths but we have shipped frozen placenta smoothie cubes to a few clients!) and a proprietary line of herbal tinctures targeted at Common postpartum struggles like lactation support, mood regulation and increased energy.
