PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia Verizon employee who saved a cat stuck atop a utility pole this year was recognized by PETA for his effort.
Maurice German was named one of PETA's Top Animal Rescuers for his selfless rescue of a cat who was stuck on top of a utility pole.
German's actions went viral, but later drew disciplinary action from Verizon.

German was working for Verizon in the Port Richmond neighborhood back in March 2019 when neighbors told him that the cat, Princess Momma, had been stuck on top of a pole for 12 hours.
He then used his truck's hydraulic lift to reach her.

"When Maurice German heard that he was in the right place at the right time to save a terrified cat, he didn't hesitate to spring into action," says PETA Vice President Tracy Reiman. "All of PETA's top rescuers are setting an example of the right way to treat animals in the new year and beyond."
Verizon suspended German for 15 days after violating company rules by using his truck. But the community rallied behind him and raised thousands of dollars.
German and other honorees will receive an award certificate; a Merry-Mint Cocoa and Mug Gift Set; PETA's 2020 Rescued Calendar; a reusable, collapsible straw from FinalStraw; and a box of Divine Treasures' Divine Kingdom vegan chocolates.
PETA previously presented German the "Hero to Animals Award" for his actions.
