Philly Film Society Announces New Drive-In, Theater Film Series

Two new series will showcase movies on their 20-year anniversaries at the drive in and blockbusters in 4K resolution at the Film Center.

PHILADELPHIA — Two new curated film series are coming to the Philadelphia Film Society Drive-In at the Navy Yard and the film society's film center, showing movies such as "Legally Blonde," "Indiana Jones" installments, "The Lord of the Rings," and more.

The Philadelphia Film Society said it is launching 20th Anniversary Series at the drive-in and the Blockbusters in 4K Series at the film center.

The 20th Anniversary Series will run through the fall and the Blockbusters in 4K Series run through the summer.

The Film Center with a slate of both nostalgic and newly released films as well as an always operating bar/cafe that features a curated beer list, a selection of red and white wines, and film themed specialty cocktails.

20th Anniversary Series at the Drive-In

Tickets are $12. Philadelphia Film Society members pay just $8 and children under 12 are $7.

"Legally Blonde," 2001, 96 minutes, PG-13 — July 13

To win back her Harvard-bound former beau, valley girl Elle Woods enrolls at the university’s law school and ends up excelling in the legal arts.

"Josie and the Pussycats," 2001, 98 minutes, PG-13 — July 20

A girl group finds themselves in the middle of a conspiracy to deliver subliminal messages through popular music.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," 2001, 178 minutes, PG-13 — July 27

A meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

Blockbuster in 4K Series at the Film Center

Tickets are $13. Philadelphia Film Society members pay just 98 and children under 12 are $8.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," 1984, 118 minutes, PG — July 15 through July 18

The second of the Lucas/Spielberg Indiana Jones epics is set a year or so before the events in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Indy needs to retrieve a precious gem and several kidnapped young boys on behalf of a remote East Indian village. This time he teams up with a nightclub singer and a 12-year-old boy.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark," 1981, 115 minutes, PG — July 16 through July 18

Renowned archeologist and expert in the occult, Dr. Indiana Jones, is hired by the U.S. Government to find the Ark of the Covenant, which is believed to still hold the ten commandments. Unfortunately, agents of Hitler are also after the Ark. Indy and his ex-flame Marion escape from various close scrapes in a quest that takes them from Nepal to Cairo.

"Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," — 1989, 127 minutes, PG-13 ‚ July 17 through July 18.

When Dr. Henry Jones Sr. suddenly goes missing while pursuing the Holy Grail, eminent archaeologist Indiana Jones must follow in his father’s footsteps and stop the Nazis.
