Rather than hold the traditional parade due to the city's moratorium on events, some Mummers held a protest march against Mayor Jim Kenney.

PHILADELPHIA — Instead of holding the traditional, annual New Year's Eve Day Mummers Parade, some Mummers protested the city's decision to put a moratorium on large events, as well as Mayor Jim Kenney.
On New Year's Day, a relatively small group of Mummers marched in the city with police escorts.
Organizers on Facebook said the event sough to "peacefully protest his erroneous taxes and restrictions on our freedoms and liberties" and accused Kenney of having an "anti-Philly agenda."

By about 10 a.m. Friday, groups of 10 to 40 people hit the streets in South Philadelphia, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Videos and photos from the event showed many marching without masks but with drinks in hand, some waving flags and signs mocking Kenney.

Kenney said before Christmas that the city would not tamp down on the protest and that officials would try to keep participants safe.
"Well, I think it's important to remember that the bulk of the Mummers and their organized groups made clear that they weren't going to march this year," he said.

The scene of Mummers going down 2nd Street back to the Mummer Museum, it’s mostly young kids enjoying some beers & traditional wedding music - Bohemian Rhapsody, Come On Eileen. Subtle right wing political tokens, thin blue line flags & very few masks. The mood is positive. pic.twitter.com/W2i1XCLi0I
