ALLENTOWN, PA — Aisha Nieves was heartbroken when her dog, Kovu, went missing back in 2019. She looked around the house, and throughout her Allentown, Pennsylvania, neighborhood for days, with no luck.

Nearly two years later, Nieves was finally ready to adopt a new pet. But after looking through the Lehigh County Humane Society website, she found Kovu, who the shelter named “Ash.”

“I saw the little scar over one eye, the scar from when he got caught in a gate, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s my baby, that’s Kovu!’” Nieves told The Morning Call.

Nieves was worried Kovu, a tan pitbull-rottweiler mix, wouldn’t remember her. But when she arrived to pick him up, his tail was wagging as the dog and owner embraced after two years apart.

Kovu “let out the most excited squeal we have ever heard,” the humane society wrote on Facebook.

The dog spent much of the past few years with another family that adopted him in October 2019. The family had to give him up, taking him back to the same Lehigh County shelter, earlier this month due to a possible eviction, the humane society told The Morning Call.

Now, he's back home.

“I told him, ‘Yeah, buddy, you’re going home,’” Nieves told The Morning Call. “‘I’m so sorry this happened. Never again am I losing you.’”
