State Rep. Ed Gainey Wins Endorsement For Pittsburgh Mayor

Gainey was endorsed by the Allegheny County Democratic Committee on Sunday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Democratic Committee has endorsed state Rep. Ed Gainey for mayor. He is the first African American mayoral candidate to get an endorsement from the Allegheny County Democratic Committee.

“I’m honored to have the support of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee in this campaign," Gainey said in a news release.

"I’ve spent the past six weeks talking to committee members in every corner of our city about their priorities for our city, and it’s clear from today’s result that we share a common vision for a brighter, more prosperous future for all Pittsburghers. I look forward to fighting alongside committee members to deliver meaningful public safety reform, making our city more affordable and welcoming for working families, and holding our largest employers accountable.”

Gainey is running against incumbent Mayor Bill Peduto, who did not seek the committee endorsement. Retired city police officer Tom Moreno also is running for mayorat.

Gainey, 51, of Lincoln-Lemington, has represented the 24th Legislative District since 2013. The district includes his neighborhood as well as Homewood, East Liberty, East Hills and Wilkinsburg, which is just outside the city border.

Gainey is a former aide to Joe Preston, his predecessor as the district's representative. He also worked for the city in a community and economic development position.
