Alligators, Snakes, Other Animals Rescued From Pittsburgh Home

More than 30 exotic animals were confiscated from a man's house Tuesday. They all are in poor condition.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and city animal control have seized more than 30 animals living in poor conditions from a Beechview man who owned one of the alligators recently found roaming around the city. Police also removed a number of dead animals from the residence.

Confiscated from Mark McGowan's home were:

  • Three alligators.
  • Two guinea pigs.
  • Six rabbits.
  • A rattlesnake.
  • Five yellow-belly sliders.
  • Four quail.
  • Four hairless rats.
  • One Burmese python.
  • Two green iquanas.
  • Three Chinese water dragons (one deceased).
  • One Nile monitor lizard.

The rattlesnake was taken to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. The rest were taken to Humane Animal Rescue, which posted the following statement on Facebook: "Our staff are working to get these animals the medical attention they need and the humane living arrangements that they deserve. The animals (are) all in poor condition."

Multiple dead animals were found in the house, according to police.

McGowan is the owner of Chomp, one of three alligators recently captured while roaming around city streets. Those animals have been taken to the Cape May Zoo in New Jersey; their permanent home soon will be a reptile park and wildlife center in Tampa.

No charges have been filed against McGowan at this point.
