Heat Wave Scorches Pittsburgh, But Many Swimming Pools Closed

A staffing shortage has forced the closure of many swimming pools in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Temperatures in Pittsburgh and southwestern PA likely will top 90 degrees on Monday. But if you're looking to cool off in an area swimming pool, you might be out of luck.

Allegheny County pools at North Park, Settlers Cabin, South Park and Boyce Park will be closed on Monday. In Pittsburgh, only eight of the city's public swimming pools will be open today.

The city and county have had difficulty finding enough lifeguards to adequately staff swimming pools.

"With outdoor pools being closed since the Summer of 2019, it has been challenging to recruit-hire lifeguards," a statement on the city website's pool page stated.

"Many of our guards are typically summer return employees, with no season last year due to the pandemic, lifeguard staffing levels have been difficult to re-establish. Citiparks will continue to
recruit, train and certify lifeguards to work towards opening additional pools."
