Juneteenth 2021: What's Open, Closed Around Pittsburgh

The Juneteenth holiday occurs on Friday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — All Allegheny County offices will be closed Friday in observance of the Juneteenth National Freedom Day holiday.

The closure includes the independently elected offices, courts and county council.

The county’s parks will be open, including its golf courses, spray parks, and pools during normal hours. Hartwood Acres Mansion will be closed.

All offices will be open for regular business hours on Monday.

City of Pittsburgh offices and facilities also will be closed Friday, but regular Department of Public collection of refuse and recyclables will continue on schedule. Mayor Bill Peduto introduced legislation to City Council in February to make Juneteenth an official city holiday for the first time.

Spray parks and swimming pools will be open Friday but other Citiparks facilities will be closed, as will senior centers, recreation centers and the Mellon Park Tennis Center. A large Juneteenth celebration will be occurring in Mellon Park on Friday.

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

The legislation gained momentum after last year's Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd last year and Democrats seizing the White House and Congress.
