Notable Pittsburgh Singer Dies
The lead singer of one of Pittsburgh's most popular local bands has died.
PITTSBURGH, PA — Jimmy Sapienza, the lead singer of the local band Five Gus Named Moe, has died. Mr. Sapienza, 71, of Forest Hills, succumbed to kidney disease.
Mr.Sapienza served as a medic in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War era. He also designed and manufactured T-shirts before forming his band in the 1980s. Five Guys Named Moe was the official band of the KDKA spaghetti breakfast with the late morning show host John Cigna.
Five Guys Named Moe played at multiple events and venues, including night clubs, weddings,
theme-parks, Pittsburgh’s First Night, and church festivals. Mr. Sapienza was a regular performer in his hometown of Forest Hills at Community Day and for his town’s Centennial in 2019.

In 2006, for the Pittsburgh's bicentennial celebration, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named Mr. Sapienza's tribute song, “I Love Pittsburgh”, as the city’s Best ‘Burgh Song.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home in Turtle Creek.
