PennDOT Announces Major Road Projects For Pittsburgh Area

PITTSBURGH, PA — PennDOT has highlighted more than 89 projects that will take place across District 11 – which includes Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties – during the 2021 construction season.
“The department and our partners look forward to another year of delivering improvements for the Pittsburgh region,” said PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian. “We urge motorists to use caution in our work zones as we deliver the necessary improvements to our transportation system.”
Overall highlights in the 2021 construction season for District 11 include:

- Approximately 288 miles of paving or roadway maintenance.
- Approximately 25 bridges will be repaired or replaced.
- Approximately 10 slides will be repaired.
“While funding challenges and Covid-19 have presented hurdles to our construction program, I am pleased that District 11 is able to deliver these important investments to our region’s infrastructure in 2021," District 11 Executive Cheryl Moon-Sirianni said.

- Route 28 Highland Park interchange improvement project to address an existing bottleneck, roadway and ramp reconstruction, $47.3 million.
- I-79 Neville Island Bridge rehabilitation, $42.1 million.
- East Carson Street safety improvement project $16.3 million.
- McLaughlin Run Road roundabout in Upper St. Clair, $4.6 million.
- US 30 resurfacing and realignment in Greene Township in Beaver County, $8.5 million.
Notable projects that are expected to begin this year include:
- Route 28 resurfacing of nearly 7 miles of roadway in Allegheny County, estimated at $12-13 million.
- Route 30 roadway improvements and culvert replacement in Wilkinsburg and Forest Hills, estimated at $18-20 million.
- Route 50 bridge replacement and concrete roadway reconstruction in South Fayette Township and Bridgeville, estimated at $12-14 million.
- I-79 roadway resurfacing and bridge deck replacement, estimated at $35-40 million.
- Freedom Road reconstruction and realignment in Sewickley Township and Conway in Beaver County, estimated at $26-30 million.
