Pitt Hires Replacement For Fired Athletic Director

The University of Pittsburgh has hired a new athletic director a month after firing former AD Heather Lyke.

PITTSBURGH, PA ? Allen Greene, a veteran college athletics administrator, on Friday was named the University of Pittsburgh's next athletic director. He will begin his new duties Nov. 1.

Greene, 47, is the senior deputy athletic director and chief operating officer at Tennessee and is the former athletic director at Buffalo and Auburn. He also has held positions at Ole Miss and Notre Dame.

He will replace Heather Lyke, who was fired last month by Pitt Chancellor Joan Gabel after seven years on the job.

"In Allen Greene, we have a proven national leader who exemplifies the Pitt way, and who has all of the experience and intangibles to elevate our athletics program in competition and in the classroom," Gabel said in a statement.

"In my conversations with Allen and with many others who know him well, it is clear that he will lead us successfully into the new world of intercollegiate athletics."

Said Greene: "I am inspired by the storied history of Pitt Athletics and am fully dedicated to helping our Panthers reach even greater heights in thefuture. I am looking forward to meeting and working on behalf of Pitt'sstudent-athletes, coaches, staff and campus leaders. "

According to his biography on the Tennessee athletics website, Greene graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in finance. He was an outfielder for the Fighting Irish baseball team and a ninth-round draft pick by the New York Yankees. He later received his master's degree from Indiana University's South Bend campus.
