Severe Storms Could Hit Pittsburgh Monday

PITTSBURGH, PA — Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop in southwestern Pennsylvania by this afternoon in advance of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service. Initial storms will be scattered, but are expected to increase in coverage and intensity later in the day.

Damaging wind will be the dominant threat, but tornadoes and large hail are also possible.

Most of the precipitation is expected to occur after 1 p.m. Today's high temperature will be near 86, with wind gusts as high as 25 mph with higher gusts possible in thunderstorms. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts of as much as half an inch possible, with larger amounts possible in storms.

Showers and storms are expected to continue this evening and overnight, with as much as another half-inch of rain falling and higher amounts possible during storms. The low will be near 55. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

The storms are expected to move out of the area by Tuesday morning, but expect much colder temperatures once the cold front passes. The high tomorrow is expected to only reach the upper 60s.
