Two-Year South Side Safety Project Could Snarl Traffic

Safety upgrades are planned for a 2.5-mile stretch of East Carson Street.

PITTSBURGH, PA - A $16.3 million safety improvement project to get under way soon in the South Side could inconvenience motorists and pedestrians for the next two years.

PennDOT crews are conducting preparatory work on East Carson Street between the Smithfield Bridge and 33rd Street, with construction work slated to begin in early April. The project includes milling and resurfacing, signage and signal upgrades, concrete pavement patching, drainage, guide rail, ADA ramps,curb and sidewalk, pavement markings and other miscellaneous

construction along the 2.5 mile stretch of East Carson Street.

Additionally, pedestrian safety improvements including bump-outs, high visibility crosswalks, pedestrian countdown signals will be installed.

Traffic impacts will include daylight off-peak, overnight, and weekend lane restrictions. Details on specific restrictions will be announced when the project gets closer to beginning.
