WQED to Air Special About Allegheny River Islands on Monday
Here's a look at a special show about the river islands that are located by the Plum-Oakmont area.
"The Allegheny River Islands: Urban Oases," a part of WQED’s Experience series, will air on Monday.
The half-hour program will air at 7:30 p.m. It explores the history of the islands, and goes ashore to show viewers the conservation efforts and what’s actually there: from wildlife to native plants, from human inhabitants to artifacts left behind.
The segment first aired in 2010. It explores Allegheny Land Trust’s Sycamore Island, which is a rare and unique floodplain hardwood forest on the Allegheny River near Blawnox. Others include Nine Mile Island, 12 Mile Island and 14 Mile Island, which are located on the river near the Oakmont and Verona areas, and Allegheny River Lock and Dam No. 3 near Plum.
