2-Year, $40M Construction Project Begins On Schuylkill Expressway

Lane closures are planned through late 2020 on two stretches of the Schuylkill Expressway in Philly and Montgomery County.

A major construction project on one of the region's most notoriously congested roadways could keep traffic backed up intermittently through late 2020.

Lane closures are scheduled on two stretches of the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia and Montgomery County as crews work to repair aging stretches of viaducts.

The project, which costs a total of $39,776,919, begins on Thursday evening, April 4.

There are two key areas which the I-76 Viaduct Repair project is addressing: a smaller portion of the road in West Conshohocken that runs over Route 23, and a long stretch from the I-676 junction to University Avenue in Philadelphia.

Typically the work will require one lane to be closed, but there will be periods of multi-lane closures, weekend closures, and full closures, officials said. The schedule calls for lane closures between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday through Saturday nights.

PennDOT is hopeful the project in West Conshohocken will be completed by the end of 2019. The city construction, however, may not be done until late in 2020.

No construction will take place through the winter months.
