Plymouth Township Honors Firefighter with Lifesaving Award

An off-duty firefighter pulled a woman from a burning vehicle.

An off-duty Harmonville firefighter made a split-second decision that saved a person’s life.

On Monday, the Plymouth Township Council presented Kevin Ambs with a commendation for heroism after Ambs rescued a driver trapped in a vehicle moments before it burst into flames.

The vehicle crash took place on Sept. 20 at 225 W. Germantown Pike. One of the vehicles involved in the crash caught fire and quickly became engulfed in flames. The driver, Charlene Washington, was disoriented as a result of being struck by the airbag and was unable to get out of the vehicle.

Ambs, who was travelling in the opposite direction of the crash, saw that the vehicle had caught fire. He stopped his personal vehicle, jumped over the median and pulled Washington out of the vehicle just prior to the car becoming fully engulfed in flames. Ambs’ quick-thinking actions saved the driver’s life.

In other business, the Plymouth Township Council recognized Public Works employee James Schultz for 30 years of service; and Building and Grounds employee Doris Blide for 20 years of service.
