West Valley Green Bridge Reopens In Whitemarsh

The bridge, which has been frequently damaged in the past, does not allow any vehicles over seven feet in height.

WHITEMARSH, PA — The oft-damaged historic West Valley Green Bridge in Whitemarsh Township has reopened to traffic, officials announced on Monday.

The bridge, which carries traffic over Wissahickon Creek, has now had "interim safety repairs" completed.

Motorists can now use the bridge as further repairs continue, but all vehicles must be under seven feet in height and three tons in weight.

“While this interim project enables the bridge to be opened, the project to fully replace the bridge continues to progress through design and review phases,” Montgomery County Commissioner Val Arkoosh said in a statement.

The bridge will be monitored every six months for compliance with PennDOT regulations, overall condition, and safety, the county said.

The bridge was closed due to structural deficiences in 2018. It had an average daily traffic of about 6,000 vehicles at that time.

The 183-foot long bridge was originally constructed in 1844.
