WISSAHICKON — Authorities are investigating after a woman was attacked Monday night on a trail in Wissahickon Park.

The incident occurred at around 7:45 p.m. in the Cresheim Creek area, on the White Trail near where it crosses the creek.

After assaulting the woman, the man fled towards Cresheim Road aand Emlen Street, Friends of the Wissahickon said in a statement issued regarding the attack.

"The Wissahickon Valley Park should be a safe space for all to visit and enjoy without the fear of violence," the organization said.

The park was crowded on Monday night, with hundreds of visitors swimming and barbecuing in the area between Devil's Pool and just past Valley Green.

Officials also urged visitors to the park to vary their routine and use different parts of the park, visit with a friend if possible, avoid wearing headphones, and to let someone know where they are going.

The 14th police district is investigating the case.
