COVID Cases Of Villanova Coach Jay Wright, Team Staff Pause Game

The Jan. 2 basketball game at Xavier has been postponed due to 2 positive COVID-19 tests among team staff, including head coach Wright.

VILLANOVA, PA — Villanova University's basketball team has halted all team activities since head coach Jay Wright and another team staff member have reported testing positive for COVID-19, the team reported this week.

Head Coach Jay Wright is in isolation per CDC guidelines and the university reported he is experiencing mild symptoms of COVID-19, the university reported.

"Our players have been very diligent and disciplined with all of the COVID protocols," Wright said.

"Unfortunately, we have had two staff members test positive. I am one of them. My symptoms are mild, and we remain connected as a team and staff by phone and Zoom. I am grateful to our Team Physician, Dr. Mike Duncan, who has worked tirelessly to help guide us safely through this."

The BIG EAST Conference has announced that the Wildcats' Jan. 2 game at Xavier is postponed. No determination had been announced as of this morning on how the pause will affect later scheduled games.

The university has reported 427 cases of COVID-19 since August, and all but 10 of those are reported as recovered, in data last updated Dec. 6, at the end of the fall semester.
