October brings with it cooler weather, shorter days, darker nights and the anticipation of Halloween. This also encourages theater lovers to look for “all things scary” and Footlighters Community Theater is happy to comply with its local production of THE BAD SEED.
Set in the Southern apartment of Colonel and Mrs. Penmark, the play focuses on their seemingly perfect daughter. Eight-year-old Rhoda can charm her way into getting just about anything she wants...except a highly coveted penmanship medal that is awarded instead to Rhoda’s classmate, Claude Daigle. When Claude is discovered drowned, Rhoda's mother Christine begins to suspect that the girl had something to do with his death. The mother’s suspicions challenge exploration into her own past and Christine takes the audience with her through a dark and tangled journey.
Adapted from the William March novel of the same name, The Bad Seed premiered on Broadway in December 1954. Actress Nancy Kelly, playing the mother, received a Tony Award for the original stage production and later an Academy Award nomination for the 1956 film adaptation.
