Main Line Catholic School Teacher Fired Over Gay Marriage: It Was Like A Death

In an interview with CBS3, Marige Winters expressed her own feelings over her dismissal from Waldron Mercy Academy.

The Main Line Catholic school teacher fired in June over her same-sex marriage has stated that her dismissal “was like a death.”

“What it was like inside, was like a death,” Margie Winters told CBS3 in an interview this week.

Winters had been an educator and director of religious studies at the Waldron Mercy Academy, in Merion Station, for the past eight years. She has stated she was terminated after at least two parents learned of her marriage to her wife, Andrea Vettori.

The two have been married for seven years. According to Winters, the school had known of their relationship since 2007.

Speaking to CBS3, Winters does not believe she will be reinstated at the school, despite vocal support from hundreds of parents, students and teachers at the school, who expressed their disagreement with the school’s decision at a prayer vigil this month.

Meanwhile, a Go Fund Me page, created three days ago with the aim of helping to support Winters and her wife financially in the aftermath of losing her job, has so far raised more than $16,800.

Winters also told CBS3 that she and her wife met while entering religious life as Sisters of Mercy, the same order that heads Waldron Mercy Academy, but chose a life together instead. She added that they have no plans to leave the church.
