See Coronavirus Figures For Delco's Nursing Homes

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — State officials have released specifics on the number of coronavirus cases and deaths at nursing homes and long-term care facilities in Delaware County and throughout Pennsylvania.

Nursing home and long-term care facilities in Pennsylvania have been ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic. More than 68 percent of Pennsylvania's total coronavirus deaths have occurred in nursing or long-term care homes.

In some counties, including several in the Philadelphia suburbs, more than 80 percent of the deaths have occurred in nursing homes.

The situation inside Pennsylvania's nursing homes during the pandemic has become so grim that Attorney General Josh Shapiro has opened criminal investigations into several long-term facilities. Shapiro did not say specifically which facilities are under investigation.

With the hope of getting the spread under control, Pennsylvania last week launched a universal testing effort in nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

“Long-term care facility residents are among the most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, and we want their families to have the latest information on what is going on in the facilities in which their loved ones reside,” Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine said. “COVID-19 is a particularly challenging situation for these settings as they care for residents with serious medical conditions.

We will continue to work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents through education, resources and testing.”

The data released Tuesday provides the number of cases, number of employee cases and number of deaths that have occurred at each facility. For facilities with less than five in any of these data points, the information is redacted.
