Villanova Tops St Mary's In First Round Of March Madness

The No. 6 Wildcats squeezed out a four-point victory over No. 11 seeded St. Mary's Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

VILLANOVA, PA — In the first round of the NCAA men's college basketball tournament, AKA March Madness, Villanova's Wildcats emerged victorious, advancing in the tournament.

Villanova squared off against St. Mary's Gaels in Hartford, Connecticut Thursday night.

In the end, Villanova, a No. 6 seed, came out on top 61-57 over the California university, which was seeded 11th.

Guard Phil Booth led Villanova with 20 points, while forwards Eric Paschall and Jermaine Samuels had 14 and 12 respectively.

The Wildcats will take on Purdue Saturday at 8:40 p.m. in the second round of play. Purdue is seeded at No. 3.
