Devon Prep Pitcher Gets College Nod

Malvern teen is getting attention from Major League scouts.

Devon Prep is sharing some exciting news about one of its seniors with Patch.  It's a big milestone for every high school senior awaiting college acceptance news.  It's even bigger for a student athlete who is getting the attention of Major League Baseball scouts.

Devon Prep provided the following information to Patch:

Devon Prep’s Senior Pitcher Zach Schellenger, of Malvern, recently signed a commitment letter with Seton Hall University to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level in the fall of 2014.

The 6 foot 5 right-hander has been a member of the varsity baseball program at Devon Prep for the past four years. “I’m excited to be attending Seton Hall next year,” Schellenger said. “They have an excellent pitching staff in addition to being a great academic institution.” Schellenger was named the Bicentennial Athletic League’s (BAL) Most Valuable Player for Spring 2013, and he helped lead Devon Prep to the PIAA District 1 Class A final in the 2013 season.

During the season Schellenger had an ERA of 1.19. He struck out 99 batters in 63 innings and his fastball averaged 90-93 m.p.h. Most recently Schellenger was selected to compete in the prestigious New Balance Area Code Games which took place last August in Long Beach, California.  He was selected to a Northeast region squad, representing the New York Yankees.  The Area Code Games tournament consists of eight teams representing eight regions nationwide. The teams include the best players from around the nation competing at the highest level, while being evaluated by scouts from all 30 Major League teams and the Major League Scouting Bureau.

According to Devon Prep Varsity Baseball Coach Mark Aquilante, “Major League scouts saw Zach for the first time last year. They were impressed with his size, velocity, and his mental toughness on the mound. He has a 90-93 mph fastball, a "pro" slider as the scouts put it, and a devastating changeup.”
